Candles at Christmas are essential. The season is all about those nostalgic smells from the years before that flood us with the most special memories shared with friends and family. Now who wouldn’t want a candle that does just that? Sometimes we don’t have enough time in between our day jobs and the weekends leading up to Xmas to go to a festive market or go ice skating. And that’s fine because that’s just life!
If we could harness the fragrances that make Christmas special to you then that’s all we could as for and if you think we’re missing a scent get in touch with us at info@mourvier.co.uk
What Scents To Make You Merry
You couldn’t narrow the essence of Christmas down to just one note. Think about the smell of a freshly baked gingerbread house, or spiced mulled wine with hints of cinnamon and winter berries, or the crispness of the winter trees as the cold wind brushes past. All of these scents can bring back different memories during the festive season which makes them all equally important.
We think these 10 scents will make you feel festive, read on to find out why!
1. Gingerbread
One of our favourite activities at Christmas was spending the evening baking fresh gingerbread which we would later construct into a house the next day. The scent of the ginger is so strong that it fills the house in a matter of minutes once you’ve put your first batch of dough in the oven. Now, even though this memory fills us with joy, we can't forget how stressful it is when the baking, constructing, or decorating doesn’t go to plan.
I remember taking a moment of silence to allow myself to de-stress so I could carry on and finish the gingerbread house ready to present it to the rest of my family for their feedback. I don’t know if you were like me but as every year passes I had the goal to out do myself so it got ridiculous in the end!
What makes gingerbread a classic festive fragrance is the mix of warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, combined with sweet buttery notes, and a base of ginger of course. This isn’t for everyone but if you love ginger as much as we do you need to keep your eyes peeled for our Christmas drop.
2. Christmas Trees
I mean the names a dead giveaway, ‘Christmas’ trees, there was no doubt this scent would be on our list for the season's favourites. When we think of the flavour profiles we know pine is the dominant force, you cannot go on a winter walk without the smell of pine hitting you right in the face. And, if you were one of those families who bought their Christmas tree fresh then your living room would have been filled with pine.
Imagine lighting a candle that brought you back to memories of decorating your christmas tree with your loved ones, working together detangling the lights that somehow always get tangled no matter how you put them away. That memory we hope would bring you so much joy. If you love the smell of pine, take a look at Your Nan’s Bathroom.
3. Outdoor Woodsmoke Fire
Now what would the festive season be without an open firepit in your back garden melting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate. Wrapping up in blankets while warming your hands up by the fire is a winter treat. When you think of the flavours we get from this scent we would expect a rich woody profile comforted by a smokey musk. Our F*ck It’s Autumn candle is our favourite for this!
4. Hot Chocolate
Hot coco is a must for the winter period! You can be as simple or extravagant with your festive drink, some make a tower of cream and sprinkle mini marshmallows, while others take it a step further and sprinkle a little cinnamon or chocolate on top. Our tip would be to put a layer of marshmallows on first before your cream to stop it melting too quickly!
Whether you make it fresh or use a packet your kitchen quickly fills with the richness of chocolate, and it’s the perfect sweet treat before bed in our eyes (we won’t tell anyone 👀).
5. Clementines & Cloves
Do you remember those merry oranges you used to decorate at school in the winter for Christingle. That’s probably where my mind points to when I first think about this fruit at Christmas. Oranges are so pungent that their citrusy scents ooze almost immediately once you start peeling back the skin.
Now, mix your clementines with cloves and you’ve got yourself a warm spicy aroma that gives you a sense of comfort instantly. We love this scent so much that mandarin features in two of our candles, check out our Fiat 500 Club candle.
6. Christmas cake and mince pies
Christmas pudding isn’t for everyone. It’s like marmite, you either love it or hate it! But that hasn’t stopped the different variations cropping up around the UK, in Yorkshire they like to add a slide of cheddar to eat alongside their festive pudding 🧀. The classic Christmas cake should be made with brandy which gives the dessert a distinct spiciness that compliments the fruit and cinnamon so well.
7. Winter berries
Cranberries are a popular winter berry that you will see everywhere during the winter months, from cranberry sauce, to mulled wine and other aromatic cocktails. People even use dried winter berries and artificial ones in the festive decor to add that pop of colour. Winter berries bring that tartiness to a scent and also packs a punch with the fruity aroma too.
8. Mulled wine
Mulled wine is essential at Christmas. There’s nothing else quite like it to get you in the merry mood. Our favourite is when you can smell the cinnamon, nutmeg, and winter berries from the steam coming off your warm cup of red wine! The perfect drink after a long day at the Xmas markets. If you like the smell of mulled wine you may like Daddy’s Home which is rich in a sweet, spicy musk.
9. Cinnamon
This spice starts becoming popular around Autumn time where pumpkin spice lattes launch in every coffee shop, fall recipes flood your feed, and cinnamon buns are craved. Moving into winter, cinnamon is used just as much as in fall with Christmas pudding, mulled wine, and seasonal bakes. A very versatile scent, cinnamon is used in seasonal food and drink as well as Christmas wreaths and decor to add a warming aroma to your room instantly making you feel cosy.
10. Chestnuts
Winter wouldn’t be the same without knocking conkers with your friends. Not your typical delicacy when you think of festive treats to enjoy but at every market you can guarantee one vendor is dishing out roasted chestnuts which fills the aims with a sweet, smoky musk that you can’t help but feel cosy from.
